Who Should Take the TCF Canada?
Anyone, regardless of nationality or first language (including native French speakers and individuals from Francophone countries)—who plans to apply for permanent residency or Canadian citizenship through IRCC can take the TCF Canada as proof of language ability.
TCF Canada – Test Format
The TCF Canada exam is made up of four required components, designed to assess your overall proficiency in the French language. These components are:
Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing.
-
The Listening section includes 39 multiple-choice questions, each with only one correct answer.
-
The Reading section also contains 39 multiple-choice questions, testing your ability to understand written texts.
-
The Speaking portion is made up of 3 tasks that increase in complexity, requiring you to express yourself clearly and appropriately in different contexts.
-
The Writing section consists of 3 written tasks, also presented in order of increasing difficulty, evaluating how well you can write in French in formal and informal contexts.
Each section is aligned with the levels defined by both the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).
